Shape of the literature

A good literature review does not merely tell the reader what individual studies found. It should help the reader see the shape of the literature as a whole, such as emerging trends, areas of emphases, areas of weakness, and movements away from particular ideas.

You might think in terms of making a map of the literature, rather than simply “reviewing articles.” The distinction is simply this: A weak literature review only tells the reader what authors have written, while a good literature review also shows the reader what the literature as a whole looks like.

In other words, you should identify and explain relevant patterns in the literature, such as areas of emphasis, emerging trends, changes over time, areas of agreement and disagreement, recurring weaknesses, and neglected questions or contexts.

Look for several kinds of patterns. You only need to discuss those that are actually present and relevant to your research question, and you might never discuss all of them. Besides, there might be others:

As you go, you might notice unanswered or inadequately answered questions. These should emerge from the preceding discussion rather than suddenly appearing at the end as an unsupported claim that there is a “gap.” An “inadequately answered question” is a question with plenty of studies but inconclusive results. The evidence may be inconsistent, the methods may have recurring limitations, or nearly all the studies may come from the same kind of context. Those are legitimate reasons for further research even though the topic has already been studied extensively.

Carilah beberapa jenis pola.
