One of the great strengths of archival research is that many collections remain partially or entirely unexplored. A researcher may make an original contribution not by discovering new data through surveys or experiments, but by uncovering, synthesising, and interpreting evidence that has existed for decades yet has never been systematically studied. This makes archival research particularly well suited to graduate theses and scholarly publications in the humanities, social sciences, theology, education, law, and organisational studies.

What kind of questions are particularly suited to archival research?

Archival records are used across almost every discipline that studies change over time, institutional memory, decision-making, and historical evidence. While historians are the largest users of archives, many other researchers—including those in education, theology, business, law, medicine, environmental science, and public policy—also depend on archival sources.

What particular kinds of training and expertise are necessary for doing archival research?

The required expertise varies by field Some archival research skills are universal, while others are highly discipline-specific. In many ways, archival research resembles archaeology: everyone needs to know how to locate, authenticate, organise, and interpret evidence, but the knowledge required to understand that evidence depends heavily on the field of study.

This has an important implication for research training. Teaching students how to use an archive is only the beginning. Effective archival researchers also need to understand how records are created, how evidence should be evaluated, and how documents function within the intellectual traditions of their own discipline.

Archival technique is largely transferable, but interpretation is discipline-specific. Two researchers may work in the same archive, examine the same box of documents, and ask entirely different questions because they bring different conceptual frameworks, background knowledge, and research methods. This suggests that archival research should not be taught as a single generic method. Instead, students first need a foundation in archival principles, followed by discipline-specific training that equips them to interpret the kinds of records most relevant to their field. Such a curriculum combines common archival competencies with specialised knowledge, enabling researchers to move confidently from locating documents to producing rigorous, original scholarship.

A useful way to think about archival research skills is these three levels.

Level 1. Researchers in all disciplines need general archival research skills

  1. Find archives. This involves identifying likely repositories, search archival catalogues and finding aids, use accession numbers and reference codes, interpret collection descriptions, and evaluate whether a collection is likely to answer the research question.
  2. Work with archival materials. They need to know how to handle, fragile manuscripts, photographs, maps, audiovisual material, and digital records. They also need to understand repository rules regarding: photography, reproduction, copyright, access restrictions, and how to cite archival materials.
  3. Describe archival materials. This involves understandings concepts such as provenance, original order, fonds, series, item, accession, and search aids. Without these concepts, it is easy to misunderstand why records are organised the way they are.
  4. Evaluate evidence. This overlaps with historical source criticism. Researcher must ask, Who created this record? Why was it created? For whom? Under what circumstances? What might be missing? How reliable is it?
  5. Use different archive systems. Understanding how organisations create and keep records helps enormously. For example, government filing systems, church administrative structures, military record systems, university records, and business filing practices. Knowing the administrative system often reveals where missing evidence is likely to be found.
  6. Use digital material. Increasingly, researchers need skills in digital archives, and they are becoming as important as traditional archival skills.
  7. Relate to people. Archival research is not purely technical. Researchers benefit from building relationships with archivists, understanding donor restrictions, communicating with repository staff, and collaborating with local communities. Experienced archivists often know collections far better than any catalogue can convey.

Level 2. Historical research skills are common across many humanities disciplines.

  1. Context. Contextual knowledge involves historical periods, institutions, political systems, geography, and social customs. This helps to more accurately interpret documents.
  2. Paleography. Older handwriting can be extremely difficult, and some archives require months of practice before documents become readable. For example, researchers may need to read medieval handwriting, nineteenth-century cursive, secretary hand, or Gothic script.
  3. Languages. Some kinds of archives may contain several languages in the same file.
  4. Chronology. Researchers must understand calendars, changing place names, changing political boundaries, and institutional changes. Otherwise records appear contradictory.

Level 3. Discipline-specific expertise

This is where fields begin to diverge significantly. Different disciplines also analyse archives differently, and the same document may be interpreted very differently. For example:
