The theological shift
Perubahan teologis

Collated and edited by Ross Woods, 2026

Until the 19th century, theology was considered the "Queen of the Sciences" because it was viewed as the ultimate framework for all truth. The Bible was treated as a flawless, divinely inspired text.

That paradigm shattered with the arrival of the Historical-Critical Method (often called "Higher Criticism"). This approach treated the Bible not as a holy artifact outside of time, but as a deeply human, historically conditioned library of texts. Here is how this intellectual revolution fundamentally secularized the study of theology itself.

The German Import: Wissenschaft

The method originated in 19th-century German universities (like Göttingen and Tübingen). German scholars applied Wissenschaft to sacred texts. At the time, it appeared to be a philosophy of rigorous, objective, and scientific research. They stopped asking, "What is God telling us in this verse?" and moved to asking, "Who wrote this verse, in what century, to what political audience, and what older texts did they plagiarize or modify?" Conservatives had not denied the historical and literary nature of scripture but the critics suggested different views.

As scholars at Harvard and Oxford began adopting these German techniques, they challenged several foundational religious beliefs:

In 1906, Albert Schweitzer published a landmark book synthesizing this era, The Quest of the Historical Jesus. The thesis was revolutionary: the supernatural Jesus of Christian dogma (who performed miracles and rose from the dead) was a theological construct. The historical Jesus was simply a 1st-century apocalyptic Jewish prophet whose predictions about the immediate end of the world turned out to be wrong.

This created an existential crisis for divinity schools. If the core texts of the faith were riddled with historical errors, mythological borrowing, and human biases, how could a university teach them as absolute truth? The solution was to stop teaching faith and start teaching history.

How This Split the Universities

The introduction of Higher Criticism split academic institutions into two camps, effectively finalizing their secularization. The Liberal Universities (Harvard/Oxford) embraced the historical-critical method. They argued that true academic freedom meant no text was too sacred to be cross-examined. This decoupled the university from church orthodoxy, permanently turning their divinity schools into secular departments of history, literature, and philology.

Religious conservatives were horrified. Professors who taught Higher Criticism were often put on trial for heresy by their churches. In response to the secularization of places like Princeton and Harvard, conservative theologians broke away to form strict, independent seminaries (like Westminster Theological Seminary in 1929) to escape secular academic standards.

By the early 20th century, the transformation was complete. Theology survived at elite universities only because it had agreed to surrender its claims to supernatural authority and submit to the ideas of secular history and science.

The Quest of the Historical Jesus.

Bagaimana Hal Ini Memecah Universitas
